The Open Source Biodigester is a low-cost, small-scale anaerobic digestion system that converts organic waste into biogas for cooking and heating, while producing nutrient-rich slurry as a byproduct. Designed using the FreeCAD platform, it provides a modular and accessible part library, mainly based on standard PVC pipes and fittings, to enable community-level or household implementation in off-grid or resource-constrained settings.
This biodigester is intended for open access use, allowing local adaptation and improvement. Its open-source nature empowers rural communities, NGOs, educators, and innovators to fabricate their own systems using locally available materials, enhancing energy access and waste recycling with minimal investment. The technology is particularly useful in rural, peri-urban, and agricultural areas where organic waste is abundant but energy access remains limited.
